Resveratrol is Really Remarkable

Want a healthy snack for yourself or your kids? Try grapes. Grape skins contain an antioxidant called resveratrol that has been shown to cause apoptosis (programmed cell death) in cancer cells. Resveratrol appears to kill off cancer cells by depolarizing (demagnetizing) mitochondrial membranes (the energy source) within tumor cells, which results in a decrease in the cell’s potential to function.

Yummy Red Grapes

Resveratrol is also known for its ability to protect from bacteria and fungi, and it has been suggested that resveratrol underlies the phenomenon known as the “French paradox” (the unexplained fact that the French, who have the same cholesterol levels as the rest of us, have only one-third the rate of heart disease).

Stick a few grapes on a toothpick and freeze them for the kiddos and you have a healthy popsicle. Be sure to choose red or black grapes and eat the skin and seeds to get the most health benefits. Another awesome thing about grapes is that the seeds contain laetrile (vitamin B17) which selectively targets cancer cells.

The Dynamics of Disease

Lord Sri Krishna with Radha. Krishna, a Kshatr...

Krishna with Radha

It is good to know about the dynamics of disease as even a little of this knowledge can save one from great calamities. First let us
tackle the basic question, why is disease dynamic? This is because life force or vital force or Prana Shakti, whatever you call it, is the
most dynamic force on earth and thus has to be influenced by a opposite dynamic force of similar magnitude for it to become deranged
and sick. Genetic engineers who are now peeping into the work of genes are getting a slight indication of how many complex works of
various nature are being performed driven by the gene structure programming contained within every cell. The vital force creates and
maintains this genetic structure, and is in turn maintained by it. How much more dynamic and powerful it must be!

The vital force is so strong that in reality we do not need any medicines or outside intervention at all to cure disease. What is really
necessary is knowing the art to harness and guide this vital energy. This science was known to the Vedic people. In fact when ayurveda
first came into being, suggesting a human intervention, the first ayurveds were looked down upon and treated as pariahs. Because with ayurveda also came the feeling that man would one day become body centric and forget the spirit. Read more »

Herbal Remedy for Stress

Pure Calm Natural Remedy

Stress symptoms can be very debilitating and can interfere with daily work schedules. This is because most of them involve the physical as well as mental health of an individual. People in search of instant stress relief often end up becoming dependent on conventional drugs because once their effect is over, the symptoms resurface with greater intensity, indicating the need for a higher potency dose.

Conventional medicine asserts that it is only an overdose of drugs that leads to side effects and that they are safe if taken under medical supervision. The ground reality is that these drugs provide instant relief from symptoms without considering the underlying cause of the disease and therefore provide only symptomatic relief.

Herbs were once the mainstay of all treatment. However, they were relegated to the back seat by the invention of the ‘so-called’ wonder cures. New invention did lead to the cure of many diseases that were earlier considered to be fatal, but for minor ailments their use came with a price. More than anything else, the side effects of allopathic drugs have brought herbal medication back to the forefront.

Herbs like kavakava, aloe vera, evening primrose, rhodiola root (golden root, roseroot), green tea and ginseng have long been used for treating stress. When you deal with stress, you have to take into consideration the factors that have causes stress in the first place. These herbs do not relieve stress instantly. They work in different ways to relieve stress. Unlike conventional medicines, herbs contain complex compounds that are capable of providing multiple benefits. It is this property of herbs that addresses the wide range of changes that occur in the body due to stress.

Different herbal medications work as mild sedatives. In addition, they provide relief from physiological problems like irritable bowel syndrome, fatigue, skin problems and a host of other ailments associated with stress. Additionally, herbal medications for stress support the health of the immune system and aid the body’s own natural curative powers. There is no risk of dependency because they are slow-acting compounds. Herbs are mostly used in the form of teas, tablets, concoctions or in diluted liquid form.

Despite the advantages, it must be emphasized that daily stress does not indicate any type of medication – neither conventional nor herbal. Mild stress can be managed with some minor changes in lifestyle. It is only in case of chronic stress that is unmanageable by natural ways to relieve stress that medication should be sought.

Dirty Laundry: Should I give up dry cleaning?

Dirty Dry Cleaning

Dirty Dry Cleaning

The problem with traditional dry cleaning is a liquid solvent called “perc,” short for perchloroethylene. (Despite the moniker, dry cleaning isn’t really dry; it just doesn’t involve water.) Perc is what dissolves the gunk off of your clothes. It’s highly effective without being labor-intensive and—unlike the cleaning chemicals of old—it’s not likely to burst into flames. That’s why cleaners have been using it for the past 50 years.

People have been concerned about the chemical’s health risks since the 1970s. Perchloroethylene (also known as tetrachloroethylene) is considered a toxic air pollutant by the EPA, meaning that it’s “known or suspected to cause cancer or other serious health effects.” Short, intense blasts of perc can cause dizziness, headaches, or loss of consciousness. But how dangerous is long-term exposure? Indoor and outdoor air usually contains a few micrograms of perc per cubic meter. At those background levels, the New York State Department of Health estimates that there’s a theoretical risk of up to five additional people in 1 million developing cancer after a lifetime of exposure. (Some agencies have calculated slightly higher risks; California’s Air Resources Board, for example, estimates an additional six to 30 cases of cancer at those background levels.) Read more »

Avoiding Toxic Commonplace Household Items

Toxic Household

Few people would willingly pick up a toxic chemical and eat it or inhale it. In fact, if something is a known toxin, most people wouldn’t even allow it to be in the house. People endlessly worry about things like nuclear contamination through new construction sites or infected water supplies. They also worry greatly about having a house that is directly under power lines. They spend hours on end lobbying their congressmen and complaining to everyone they know about their extremely dangerous exposure level to whatever it is that they are afraid of. Many people will refuse to live in a place that at one point had trace levels of nuclear waste. Even things such as lead based paint in the walls of an old house will bring about fear in the hearts of homeowners or renters. But ironically, these same people are inhaling toxic fumes or even ingesting toxic materials everyday through certain common place household items which they choose to use.

Types of Toxic Household Items

The only way you can be truly safe from possible toxins in your home environment is by educating yourself on toxic ingredients and then taking that knowledge and putting it into action. When you get to the grocery store or the local hardware store, make sure to look at every ingredient in each item that you purchase. You must be willing to forgo the sometimes deeply ingrained desire to simply purchase the cheapest thing on the shelves. Sadly, it is often times the most affordable item that is the most toxic. Many toxic materials are used because they make the production and efficacy of the item easier and more noticeable.

Things to keep an eye on when you are shopping are:

• Non-stick cookware-Teflon pans contain the toxic chemical polytetrafluoroethylene which is, ironically, released into the contents of the pan when it is heated up.

• Cleaning supplies-cleaning supplies are perhaps the worst offenders. The ones that work the fastest are often times also the most harmful. Natural cleaners should be used instead.

• Chemical fertilizers-natural fertilizers like manure should always be used instead of anything chemical and most likely toxic.

• Air fresheners-these are toxins which you are constantly breathing in.

Salmonella in Flavoring Triggers Recall

{{fr|Salmonella (image dérivée de :Image:Salmo...

Salmonella

FDA recalls some foods with flavor enhancer HVP
56 Products Recalled, Thousands More May Be Contaminated

Federal health authorities announced Thursday the recall of a commonly used flavor enhancer after samples of the product were found to contain salmonella.

“I would say it’s likely to be in thousands of food products,” said Dr. Jenny Scott, senior adviser to the director at the Office of Food Safety at the Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition, about the product, called hydrolyzed vegetable protein, also called HVP.

The bacterium, identified as Salmonella Tennessee, was found in HVP manufactured by Basic Food Flavors Inc. of Las Vegas, Nevada, the officials said.

HVP is used in processed foods, including soups, sauces, chilis, stews, hot dogs, gravy, seasoned snack foods and dressings.

“We are working hard to respond to this particular outbreak; we also are working hard to put in place the kinds of preventive control measures to prevent this kind of contamination from happening in the first place,” said FDA Commissioner Dr. Margaret A. Hamburg.

Officials noted in a telephone conference call with reporters that no illnesses have been reported and any risk to consumers would be considered low.

“Many of the foods that incorporated this product at very low levels have kill steps in place that would eliminate salmonella,” said Dr. Joshua Sharfstein, FDA’s principal deputy commissioner. He was referring to steps in preparation that would heat the product enough to kill any bacteria. “For those that don’t, we’re providing specific guidance around the need to recall,” he said.

But officials acknowledged they did not yet know just how many products might wind up being recalled.

“The manufacturer had many first-level consignees who obviously had individuals and firms that they sold to,” said Dr. Jeff Farrar, associate commissioner for food safety, FDA’s Office of Foods. “We expect this to get larger over the next several days to, actually, maybe several weeks.”

A call to the manufacturer was not returned immediately.

Sharfstein said the agency learned of the problem in early February, when a Basic Foods customer tested the product and reported to FDA that it was contaminated.

Farrar said he did not know when the plant was last inspected.

The recall affects all bulk HVP produced at the facility since September 17. The FDA posted several dozen products containing the ingredient at www.foodsafety.gov, but officials said the list was not complete. The recalled products include dips, salad dressings and soup mixes.

See the list of recalled products

Farrar said the agency was recommending recalls of those products containing HVP that might be eaten without processing or cooking that would kill the bacteria. But more needs to be done, he said. “This situation clearly underscores the need for new food safety legislation to equip FDA with the tools we need to prevent contamination,” said Farrar.

Salmonella bacteria sometimes cause fatal infections in young children, elderly people and anyone with a weakened immune system.

Symptoms in healthy people might include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.

The Center for Science in the Public Interest said the recall is “yet more proof that the Food and Drug Administration needs more authority, more inspectors and more resources to ensure that our food supply is safe.”

It added, “Most Americans would be stunned to learn that FDA doesn’t even have the authority to make recalls like these mandatory.”

A bill passed in July by the House with overwhelming bipartisan support would go a long way toward beefing up the agency’s ability to intervene in such cases, said Erik Olson, director of food and consumer product safety at The Pew Charitable Trusts.

“The existing law is basically a reactive law,” he said. “If you find contamination problems, the FDA reacts and goes out and tries to find the problem and asks for a voluntary recall.”

The FDA Food Safety Modernization Act, the law pending in the Senate, “would change the whole system, modernize it to say we’re going to try to prevent the contamination before it occurs.”

But support for the bill is not universal.

The National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition is seeking changes in the bill before passage, according to Senior Policy Associate Kate Fitzgerald.

“The last thing we want to do as a government is to inhibit these regional food systems by poorly crafted regulation,” she said. Under the proposed legislation, a farmer selling broccoli heads would be classified as a farmer, but a farmer selling broccoli florets would be classified as a facility and subject to more rigorous controls, she said.

“No one benefits if we pass a food-safety bill but it doesn’t make the food system better,” she said.

Steve Etka, legislative director at the National Organic Coalition, offered a similar view. “We want to make sure the bill is clear that it’s targeted toward the riskiest behaviors,” he said. “Right now, we think it’s kind of missing the mark in that regard.”

2 Natural Ways To Treat Anxiety

A medical student checking blood pressure usin...

What's you blood pressure?

Treatment of anxiety: a comparison of the usefulness of self-hypnosis and a meditational relaxation technique. An overview.

We have investigated prospectively the efficacy of two nonpharmacologic relaxation techniques in the therapy of anxiety. A simple, meditational relaxation technique (MT) that elicits the changes of decreased sympathetic nervous system activity was compared to a self-hypnosis technique (HT) in which relaxation, with or without altered perceptions, was suggested. 32 patients with anxiety neurosis were divided into 2 groups on the basis of their responsivity to hypnosis: moderate-high and low responsivity. The MT or HT was then randomly assigned separately to each member of the two responsivity groups. Thus, 4 treatment groups were studied: moderate-high responsivity MT; low responsivity MT; moderate-high responsivity HT; and low responsivity HT. The low responsivity HT group, by definition largely incapable of achieving the altered perceptions essential to hypnosis, was designed as the control group. Patients were instructed to practice the assigned technique daily for 8 weeks. Change in anxiety was determined by three types of evaluation: psychiatric assessment; physiologic testing; and self-assessment. There was essentially no difference between the two techniques in therapeutic efficacy according to these evaluations. Psychiatric assessment revealed overall improvement in 34% of the patients and the self-rating assessment indicated improvement in 63% of the population. Patients who had moderate-high hypnotic responsivity, independent of the technique used, significantly improved on psychiatric assessment (p = 0.05) and decreased average systolic blood pressure from 126.1 to 122.5 mm Hg over the 8-week period (p = 0.048). The responsivity scores at the higher end of the hypnotic responsivity spectrum were proportionately correlated to greater decreases in systolic blood pressure (p = 0.075) and to improvement by psychiatric assessment (p = 0.003). There was, however, no consistent relation between hypnotic responsivity and the other assessments made, such as diastolic blood pressure, oxygen consumption, heart rate and the self-rating questionnaires. The meditational and self-hypnosis techniques employed in this investigation are simple to use and effective in the therapy of anxiety.

Trihalomethanes Contaminants in Drinking Water

Is Your Drinking Water Safe?

All drinking water including bottled water contains a certain amount of chemicals. At this point it is almost unavoidable. There are currently standards for 90 of these contaminants although there could be many more than that. One of these contaminants is called trihalomethanes, or THM’s they are a chemical compound comprised of four chemicals that are found in drinking water that has been treated with chlorine. They are considered ‘by-products’ of the chemical treatment process. They are caused when chlorine bonds with natural organic or in-organic matter in water systems. Trihalomethanes are known to cause dangerous side effects to the human body. Not only can these be ingested from drinking water, but also inhaled while bathing and from swimming in water that has been treated with chlorine.

Chlorine is used to treat drinking water because of its proven ability to kill dangerous pathogens found in water naturally, including diseases like cholera and dysentery. Government associations believe that the overall risks are not that high, maintaining that it would take decades of exposure to cause any real health risks.

Risks

The government has limits on the amount of Trihalomethanes that can be found in water systems. Currently the Environmental Protection Agency or EPA regulates trihalomethanes at an annual average level of 80 parts per billion, for large drinking water systems, small drinking water systems and all ground water systems. Local governments set these limits and every area is different. It is not believed that the amount inhaled from showering is harmful, but swimming poses a greater risk. Chlorine or trihalomethanes can be absorbed through the skin, giving higher levels of contamination especially in children.

Trihalomethanes are carcinogens, also referred to as organochlorides. This type of chemical does not degrade or get digested. Your body will store it in your fat tissues. They have been found to secrete through breast milk, blood and semen. These types of carcinogens have been shown to cause DNA mutations, interfere with the immune system and cell growth. Trihalomethanes are known to cause rectal, bladder and breast cancers. There is a higher risk of asthma when exposed to trihalomethanes as well as eczema, and eroding dental enamel. They are also proven to cause a higher rate of miscarriage and birth defects.

Avoiding the Risk

The good news is that trihalomethanes can be avoided. Using an activated carbon filter will remove them from drinking water. Many health care professionals feel that a whole house water filtration system is the best way to avoid interaction with these harmful carcinogens. But there are less expensive options as well. These compounds are volatile and leaving them in a water jug in the fridge for twenty four hours will cause most of the trihalomethanes to leave the water. Reverse osmosis filtration systems do not remove these chemicals.

Puronics of Arizona is the exclusive distributor of Puronics INC for Arizona faucet and water filtration systems, residential and commercial water conditioners, water softeners, drinking water systems, reverse osmosis for home and office plus many other water treatment and filtration systems. We offer Tuscon water treatment systems that are proven to reduce water problems and improve the quality of your drinking water.

Quantum Change Leads to Substantial Change

Quantum Leap

Quantum change takes place beyond the level of vibrating subatomic particles: the primal divine energy of sound and light which inspires us on our upward and inward journey of self-healing in all areas of our life. Lao Tzu writes that the journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step. What he is describing is Quantum Change. Every step, whether thought, word, intention or action, organizes particles at the quantum level and makes us receptive to spirit. Each succeeding step on our journey attracts more energy, which leads to quantum leaps that carry us way beyond our original expectations. Quantum Change Made Easy by Chloe Faith Wordsworth.

In a Resonance Repatterning © session case study I submitted for this book, a very bright child who was legally blind, the lowest functioning student in her reading group, had an extraordinary improvement in reading ability and sense of self esteem in response to a Vision Repatterning. The day of the session, her biggest concern was fear about not being able to perform in the school play. She was afraid that she wouldn’t make it, forget her lines, and freeze up.

The session worked with transforming a memory imprint from her birth process. Her mother was in fear about not being able to make it to the hospital for her birth as she raced to the hospital. She was born in the limousine. Because of the situation, her father was not able to be present for the birth. Read more »
