Pregnant Mom
Exercising while pregnant can protect you and your baby from obesity later in life. Brisk daily walks are a great way to get started.
Need a reason to exercise and eat well while pregnant? Research shows that moms who exercise give birth to lighter, healthy-weight babies, which may reduce infants’ risk of obesity later in life. Additionally, a Reuters Health report found that overweight babies may have delayed motor skills. And it’s not just your baby who could benefit. Research shows that women of normal weight who put on more than the recommended 25 to 35 pounds during pregnancy gain an average of 44 pounds over the next 20 years. But remember: Weight gain during pregnancy is normal — and healthy — and the recommended amount of weight gain depends on your starting point. You can give your baby all the nutrients it needs by eating an average of 100 to 300 extra calories a day. If you don’t currently exercise, start slowly and take frequent breaks, working up to 30 minutes per day. Walking, swimming and stationary biking are your safest options. Of course, always check with your doctor for recommendations regarding exercise and pregnancy.
