Get your eyes checked
While reviewing high resolution images of blood vessels in the in the eye, ophthalmologist Dr. Alan Lacoste says type 2 diabetes can be deterred early. Dr. Lancoste says such eye exams gives ophthalmologists a unique peek into the entire body. Dr. Lacoste reports that by examining the retina at the back of the eye, doctors are able to detect diabetes, which otherwise may have gone unnoticed. This matter of early detection should not be taken lightly because it is a condition called “diabetic retinopathy” that causes blindness in many people who suffer with diabetes type 1 and 2.
According to the NDIC (National Diabetes Information Clearninghouse)
- Diabetes is the leading cause of new cases of blindness among adults ages 20 to 74 years.
- Diabetic retinopathy causes 12,000 to 24,000 new cases of blindness each year.
Technologies likes laser surgery can help reduce the risk of further visions loss, but in no way does it offer a reversal or cure to diabetic retinopathy. For those with diabetes, early detection is the key to preventing blindness. If current trends continue on their present trajectory, we can expect to see incidences of diabetic retinopathy grow by 50% by the year 2050. Be proactive not reactive with your health! Don’t allow yourself to become one of these sad statistics.
