Record-high pollen counts this spring mean serious allergies. Shower before bed, and keep windows closed to reduce indoor pollen residue.
Record-high pollen counts this spring mean serious allergies. Shower before bed, and keep windows closed to reduce indoor pollen residue. It’s a doozy of a year for pollen allergies, with some experts saying this is one of the worst springs they can remember. Hay fever that strikes from April to June is usually due to tree, weed and grass pollen. If seasonal allergies are wreaking havoc on your sinuses, here are a few tips to minimize their effects. Shower before bed to remove any pollen residue from your skin and hair. Keep your windows and doors shut, especially on dry, windy days. Though pollen counts can vary widely day to day, levels tend to be highest from 5 a.m. to 10 a.m. Go for walks during the evening, when counts are lower.

How to use your brain to improve your memory
Alzhiemer's Brain
- Get educated, stay challenged. Results from a study published in the October 2008 issue of Neurology found that the more education a person has, the better able she may be to fend off the dementia associated with Alzheimer’s disease and mild cognitive impairment (essentially impairment that’s beyond what’s normal for a person’s age). The same results were found when affected people had challenging jobs. So, is it that the challenge and education keeps the brain healthier or that a healthier brain is more likely to seek out higher education and a challenging job? Researchers don’t have an answer yet.
- Meditate. When regular meditators (people who spent between 10 and 90 minutes each day in deep concentration) had their brains scanned with a high-resolution MRI, the areas that regulate emotions were found to be significantly larger. To translate, the regular meditators were able to engage in more mindful behavior, which helps with concentration and memory.
In addition to a daily meditation (which need not be spent in a quiet room sitting with your legs crossed; 10 minutes of listening to calming classical music, and doing nothing else, also counts as a meditation), Michael McKee, PhD, a clinical psychologist at the Cleveland Clinic’s Department of Psychiatry and Psychology and author of Stress and Your Body, And What to Do About It, says each day we should also utilize smaller periods of time to train our minds to slow the stress response. Essentially, allowing your body fewer opportunities to get into all-systems-alert mode means you shut down the stress-induced hormonal overload that directly impacts memory function.
- Play brain games. While online brain game sites like lumosity.com are a fun, engaging way to give your hippocampus a workout, don’t disregard the brain stimulation you get from a good old-fashioned knitting session, banging on the piano keys, reading a book, cooking a new recipe or doing a crossword puzzle. Learning something new can also be considered a brain game of sorts, because every time we challenge our brain with a new task, we create the opportunity for new neuron growth, which in turn keeps our brains in top working form. And a healthier brain means better memory.
- Socialize. Having strong social connections — being part of a book club, playing Bunco or golf or just meeting a friend for coffee each week — actually boosts your brain power.

Exercise Benefits for Pregnant Women
Pregnant Mom
Exercising while pregnant can protect you and your baby from obesity later in life. Brisk daily walks are a great way to get started.
Need a reason to exercise and eat well while pregnant? Research shows that moms who exercise give birth to lighter, healthy-weight babies, which may reduce infants’ risk of obesity later in life. Additionally, a Reuters Health report found that overweight babies may have delayed motor skills. And it’s not just your baby who could benefit. Research shows that women of normal weight who put on more than the recommended 25 to 35 pounds during pregnancy gain an average of 44 pounds over the next 20 years. But remember: Weight gain during pregnancy is normal — and healthy — and the recommended amount of weight gain depends on your starting point. You can give your baby all the nutrients it needs by eating an average of 100 to 300 extra calories a day. If you don’t currently exercise, start slowly and take frequent breaks, working up to 30 minutes per day. Walking, swimming and stationary biking are your safest options. Of course, always check with your doctor for recommendations regarding exercise and pregnancy.

Death to Diabetes
DeWayne McCulley, aka The Diabetes Engineer: Author of “Death to Diabetes” will be a featured guest on “Holistic Wellness” in June, 2010.
DeWayne McCulley shocked his doctors and survived a near-death diabetic coma, despite a blood glucose of 1337, more than a 1200 points above normal!. McCulley was able to overcome severe hyperinsulinemia, hyperglycemia, hypertriglyceridemia, two major blood clots, pneumonia, and four insulin shots a day.
DeWayne McCulley, a retired Xerox engineer and Penn State graduate, further shocked his doctors by using his engineering and biochemistry background to wean himself off the insulin, Coumadin and other drugs. He lowered his average blood glucose level and his hemoglobin A1C to the normal ranges (92 mg/dl, 4.4%) while losing 55 pounds and reversing his diabetes within 4 months.
However, McCulley’s endocrinologist and his other doctors expected that it would take about 6 months before McCulley would have to return to the insulin shots and other drugs. That was over seven years ago and today he is still drug-free with an average blood glucose level of 92.5 mg/dl.
McCulley says “I was blessed with strong parents and teachers who gave me this strong work ethic and belief that I could do anything – if I really applied myself. And, if my mother, sister and my daughter (Cynthia) hadn’t taken care of me when I got out of the hospital, I would still be diabetic today.”
With support from his mother, his daughter, the local churches, and the American Diabetes Association support group, McCulley wrote a book about his near-death diabetes experience and how he recovered to live a drug-free life. The book (titled “Death to Diabetes”) explains how McCulley used his engineering background to not only get off the drugs, but beat his Type 2 diabetes and reverse the complications that were affecting his eyes, kidneys, and legs. As a result, Mr. McCulley still has healthy eyes, kidneys, and legs today.
The book Death to Diabetes is one of the few diabetes books that looks at diabetes at the cellular level and from several aspects of medical science, including pathology, etiology, and epidemiology. The book also looks at diabetes from the aspect of several engineering sciences including reverse engineering, failure modes & effects analysis, root cause analysis, statistical engineering analysis, meta analysis, and process engineering.
As a result, the book defines a comprehensive wellness program that consists of concise and easy-to-read procedures for a Type 2 diabetic, based upon nutritional science, super foods, raw juicing, proper exercise therapy, and spiritual health. The Death to Diabetes wellness program can be customized to fit any diabetic’s needs and get his/her diabetes under control within three months. Some diabetics even have the opportunity to completely reverse their diabetes and beat the disease. The book goes beyond diabetes and also addresses cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, retinopathy, neuropathy, nephropathy, and obesity.
The key benefits to the book and to following the “Death to Diabetes” wellness program include:
• Lower your blood glucose level to the normal range within days.
• Increase your energy level, and avoid the cravings and highs and lows associated with eating processed foods.
• Begin reversing and beating your diabetes within 30 days.
• Lose weight (fat) by turning your body into a fat-burning machine.
• Reduce the belly fat, which is hard to get rid of following conventional diets.
• Save thousands of dollars from drugs, more drugs, surgeries, hospital stays, and high healthcare insurance premiums.
• Save hundreds and even thousands of dollars from grocery-shopping and food bills.
• Learn how to transform your favorite foods into healthier foods, so that you can enjoy eating without the anxiety.
• Enjoy weddings, picnics, birthday parties, and other social events – because the book teaches you how to eat before and after these events to limit the damage to your health.
• Enjoy a better sex life, because the wellness program addresses circulatory issues that have proven to be one of the primary problems associated with sexual dysfunction.
• Look younger and so much better that your friends think that you have had a face-lift or liposuction!
• Prevent the complications of diabetes, including heart attack, stroke, blindness, amputation, gum disease, and kidney failure.
• Reverse your diabetes and its complications in 3 to 6 months
DeWayne McCulley states: “You can beat your diabetes, and you can reverse the complications of Type 2 diabetes – if you are armed with the proper knowledge and the drive to want to live a healthier life. Consequently, you can become a victor of wellness, and stop being a victim of disease and drugs – it’s all up to you.”
